Virtual Earth Geocoder accuracy updated

veplacefinder.jpg

I know I’m beginning to sound like a MicroSoft fanboy with all these Virtual Earth posts, this is very relevant to World Wind though as the Virtual Earth geocoder is one of the three location finding tools in World Winds Placefinder, along with FEF and Yahoo!, from the VE blog –

Virtual Earth was recently updated to provide higher accuracy geocoding–the process of assigning geographic identifiers (such as codes or geographic coordinates expressed as latitude-longitude) to map features and other data records. Most geocoders on the web today approximate a local address. Microsoft is now using the Group 1 Rooftop Geocoder, which contains geocoding information for approximately 40% of the addresses in the United States, particularly those concentrated in denser, urban cores. The result is search that returns more accurate results.
